Amy Logan — Principal Genealogist

Master’s-qualified specialist in Scottish and North East family history research.

Genealogy is not simply the tracing of names and dates; it is the careful reconstruction of lives, relationships and historical context. My work is grounded in the belief that family history deserves accuracy, clarity and professional care.

Based in the North East of England, I combine formal academic training with practical archive-based investigation. Proximity to regional record offices across Northumberland, Durham and surrounding areas allows research beyond digitised collections, ensuring conclusions are grounded in original documentation wherever possible.

Academic Training & Professional Standards

I hold a Master of Science in Genealogical, Palaeographic and Heraldic Studies, awarded in Scotland. My postgraduate training focused extensively on evidential methodology, source analysis and the interpretation of complex historical records.

The designation Qualified Genealogist reflects completion of accredited postgraduate study incorporating rigorous academic standards and professional practice. Research is conducted in accordance with recognised genealogical methodology, prioritising evidence correlation, transparency of reasoning and ethical responsibility.

All conclusions presented in client reports are supported by referenced documentation, with uncertainty clearly explained where records are incomplete or ambiguous.

Areas of Expertise

North East England

My research specialism includes Northumberland, County Durham, Newcastle and North Tyneside. Growing up in the region has provided long-standing familiarity with its social and economic history, while direct archive access enables investigations beyond online sources.

My master’s dissertation examined mining and shipping catastrophes in Northern England and Scotland, providing particular insight into the industrial and maritime heritage that shaped many local families.

Scotland

Scottish genealogy requires specialist knowledge of its distinct legal and archival systems. Postgraduate study at the University of Strathclyde provided comprehensive training in Scottish civil registration, church records, valuation rolls, testaments and land documentation.

This expertise allows complex Scottish cases to be approached with confidence, particularly where legal nuance or fragmented historical evidence must be carefully interpreted.

Research Approach

Each commission begins with careful discussion of your aims, followed by a structured research plan. Investigation is conducted using original records wherever possible, with evidence systematically analysed and correlated before conclusions are drawn.

My role extends beyond locating documentation. It involves interpreting records responsibly, placing findings within historical context, and explaining both confirmed conclusions and evidential limitations with clarity.

Clients frequently approach me after encountering conflicting online family trees or unresolved family narratives. Professional genealogical methodology replaces assumption with documented fact, restoring confidence in the historical record.

Professional research is measured not only by evidence, but by the clarity and reassurance it provides.
